----------------------------------------- "The Shortcut Method To Success" In 1961, I got my first direct sales job. The company trained me, supervised me and of course, tried to manage me. They gave me the best samples, the best territory and I had the best products to sell. But something was missing. I wasn’t selling. The problem for me was I just couldn’t seem to motivate myself to make prospecting calls. And when I did make prospecting calls, I was so negative, I attracted severe rejection. Everybody around me (including my manager) tried to help but to no avail. For seven years I stumbled about and wondered around in the direct sales industry without any meaningful success. I finally decided that I was never going to make it so I made plans to get out of the business and find something else to do. But then...I met Bob Rostigus. Bob Rostigus (whom I met through a friend) was a no-nonsense, high-powered type business man. He walked (no, marched) about and barked orders like he was some sort of military drill instructor or something. Although he was only 27 years old, he was the most successful guy with the company. His management style terrified me, yet, in some strange way, I was attracted to it. I decided to go to work for him. Bob was able to motivate me to do things I couldn’t seem to do on my on. He made me set goals; insisted that I manage my time better and learn my presentation backwards and forwards. He demanded that I prospected daily without excuses. He made me get organized. He showed me how to do it. Things started to change. As a result of my yearlong association with Bob Rostigus, I too became a top salesperson and manager. Of all the great business people I’ve ever known, I gained more from Bob’s method of managing than any other person I’ve ever known. In retrospect, he was my greatest mentor. What about you?
