"Level III Listening--The Ultimate Listening Skill"

I recently wrote an article about "The Three Levels of Listening," describing the first two levels of listening. (Click here to read this article.) At the end of the article I announced that I would write about the third level in my next newsletter.

Here it is: "Level III Listening--The Ultimate Listening Skill"

Imagine people's surprise when they first discovered that signals could travel through the air on invisible waves and could be received by tuning an antenna and receiver. Radio was born! Now we could hear Elvis!

Listening at Level III is like invisible (radio) signals coming at us from everywhere in the universe all at the same time. Level III is listening to another person at such a deep level, we pick up information not only from what they're saying but also from what they're not saying. We pick up information from the tone in their voices, their pauses, their emotion and the energy that reveals itself, and even in the interaction of the conversation itself. (That'll make you think for awhile.)

Have you ever noticed how a good speaker, musician or comedian can seem to instantly read an audience in a room and adjust his/her actions according to the impact he/she is making? That's the ability to read (and listen to) people at Level III. And guess what, you can do it too.

To listen at Level III, take your ego, opinions and judgements out of the equation and completely focus on the other person. Be aware of the energy and emotional level of what the other person is saying (or not saying). Is she sparking or flat? Is there lightness or darkness in the conversation? What does the temperature feel like? Is it cool, warm or uncomfortable?

Take in everything. Stay focused on what is being said but also take in the background noise you hear...What's that all about? What are your senses telling you about what's really going on with this person? What signals are you getting? Yeah, you've got it, Level III Listening is about using your Intuition.

Level III Listening can be described as taking in information, playing with it and seeing what emerges. This is done by simply asking questions and seeing how he or she responds. You then respond to her response and see how it lands.

You want to listen beyond the words for feelings and energy. Observe everything in the environment and make it part of the communication process. (If you hear a train in the background, tie it to your coaching: "I hear a train, are you on that train...leaving me?") Be aware of everything going on. Notice the force field that begins to surround both of you at this deep level of communicating.

Heavy, huh?

Once you've mastered the art of listening at Level III, you will know how to motivate your potential leaders by coaching (not telling) them. They will like you better, trust you more and they'll want to do business with you because you're doing something very special (and rare) for them: You are really listening to them at a very personal and deep level.

For most people, listening at Level III is a new realm of listening. It is a coaching skill that is learned. To really get good at Level III Listening, I suggest that you enroll in a good coach training course. (Professional coaches take listening very seriously.)

Imagine what an impact you can have on your sales organization and your potential prospects by communicating and listening at Level III.

Public Speaking: Speaking in public will attract prospects to you like bananas...in bunches. If you have anything worthwhile at all to say (and we all do), speaking to a group of people is one of the most effective ways to attract people to your business.

Endorsements: Getting someone with a database of your ideal prospects to endorse you will drive more business to you than you can handle. Really. Who do you know that has a trusted relationship with your target market? (What? You don't have a target market? Shame on you. Go to bed without supper.)
